Digital Preservation Service for Research Data

The Digital Preservation Service (DPS) for Research Data, aimed for higher education and other research organizations, ensures accessibility and preservation of digital research content. The goal is to enable verifiability and reproducibility of the research at various stages of the data lifecycle, making it easy to utilize research results. In this way, research datasets can be reused, evaluated, and employed in decision-making processes. The availability of preserved datasets are also ensured for future generations of researchers, as the volume of data grows rapidly due to the digitalisation of the society.

Not all research data can be preserved due to the large quantity of materials. The partner organization utilizing the service decides, if necessary, on the criteria and selects which research datasets are suitable for digital preservation. Considerations may include the following perspectives:

  • Significant potential for continued use of the data.
  • Resources invested in producing the data.
  • The difficulty, expense, or impossibility of replicating the research.
  • The importance of the data, either nationally or in terms of the organization's profile or expertise.

The Ministry of Education and Culture grants organizations the right to use the DPS upon application and makes decisions regarding the preservation of datasets. The preservation agreement defines the dataset for which usage rights are granted and the capacity allocated from the DPS.

Statistics about the usage of the DPS as well as a list of all partner organizations utilizing the service are reported in the annual Quality Reports of the DPS.

DPS Support

The Digital Preservation Services support the user during the entire preparation, packaging and submission process, as well as with all questions related to the usage of the services. Requests for support can be sent to pas-support@csc.fi.
